Kathiushka Ochoa’s Story
Last month we interviewed Kathiushca! She worked with the Sacred Valley Project for over four years. She told us about her role with the girls and the importance of equality.
Originally from Lamay, Kathiushca has worked and lived with the girls of the Sacred Valley project for the past four years. During that time, she became close to the girls and now sees herself as a mentor and a mum to all 32 girls.
Prior to working for both houses of the Sacred Valley Project, Kathiushca worked as a registered nurse. She now dedicates and spends her time with the girls and cares for them from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon.
There are many reasons why the work Kathiushca does is important. Most of the girls come from a difficult social and/or economic background with their families. Spending a lot of time with the girls, Kathiushca works on their confidence, talks to them about boys, education, work and life. As Peru remains subject to machismo, she also teaches them the importance of equal opportunities and that women can indeed work independently and be as successful as men are. One of the main reasons why she really likes her job of taking care of all girls is that, as she has no kids herself, she sees each of the girls as one of her own and she guides them personally.
Furthermore, she has plenty of freedom on how to interact with the girls. She really appreciates the different relationships she has with the members of the Sacred Valley Project. Her main responsibilities include buying food, supplies, medicine, as well as going to the girls’ school to check on their progress. All girls receive tutoring lessons in the afternoon, including Mathematics, Quechua and Spanish lessons.
Finally, during her time with the Sacred Valley Project, Kathiushca came to realise that more issues should be addressed. She would like to see the girls get an easier access to things such as health care and IT. She notably feels it is very important for the girls to learn about technology, especially computers, as it will help them with their careers and education. However, she recognises things are heading in the right direction and that organizations such as LAFF really help her work on a daily basis.
El mes pasado entrevistamos a Kathiushca! Ella trabajó con el Proyecto Valle Sagrado por más de cuatro años. Ella nos contó sobre su papel con las niñas y la importancia de la igualdad.
Originaria de Lamay cerca de Calca, Kathiushca ha trabajado y vivido con las niñas del proyecto del Valle Sagrado durante los últimos cuatro años. Durante ese tiempo, se acercó a las chicas y ahora se ve a sí misma como una mentora y una madre para todas las 32 chicas.
Antes de trabajar para ambas casas del Proyecto Valle Sagrado, Kathiushca trabajó como enfermera registrada. Ahora dedica y pasa su tiempo con las niñas y las cuida desde la tarde del domingo hasta la tarde del viernes.
Hay muchas razones por las que el trabajo de Kathiushca es importante. La mayoría de las chicas provienen de un contexto difícil económico y/o social con sus familias. Pasando mucho tiempo con las niñas, Kathiushca trabaja en su confianza; les habla sobre los niños, la educación, el trabajo y la vida. Como Perú sigue sujeto al machismo, también les enseña la importancia de la igualdad de oportunidades y que las mujeres pueden trabajar independientemente y ser tan exitosas como los hombres. Una de las razones principales por las que realmente le gusta su trabajo, cuidando a todas las niñas, es que, al no tener hijos propios, ve a cada una de las niñas como propias y las guía personalmente.
Además, le dieron mucha libertad sobre cómo interactuar con las chicas. Ella realmente aprecia las diferentes relaciones que tiene con los miembros del Proyecto Valle Sagrado. Sus principales responsabilidades incluyen la compra de alimentos, suministros, medicamentos, e incluso ir a la escuela de las niñas para verificar su progreso. Todas las niñas reciben clases de tutoría por la tarde, incluidas las clases de matemáticas, quechua y español.
Finalmente, durante su tiempo en el Proyecto del Valle Sagrado, Kathiushca se dio cuenta de que se deberían abordar más problemas. Le gustaría ver que las niñas tengan un acceso más fácil a cosas como la atención médica y tecnología informática. En particular, siente que es muy importante que las niñas aprendan sobre tecnología, especialmente sobre computadoras, ya que les ayudará con sus carreras y educación. Sin embargo, reconoce que las cosas van en la dirección correcta y que organizaciones como LAFF realmente le ayudan a su trabajo cada día.
